Tuesday, October 17, 2006, marked the official beginning of the Luther House of Study, a collaborative effort between Augustana College and North American Baptist Seminary to strengthen Lutheran leadership in the region.
In honor of the newly established program, a traditional Lutheran worship service was held in the chapel on the campus of North American Baptist Seminary. With Bishop Andrea DeGroot Nesdahl presiding, approximately 200 guests including students, school administrators, and pastors were present. Chris Croghan, Director of the Luther House of Study, preached a sermon titled, "The 'My Way' Syndrome."
Following the worship service, an informational luncheon was held in the 3-in-1 Room on the campus of Augustana College where attendees learned more about the vision and purpose of the Luther House of Study.
"Church Leaders in the Northern Plains have expressed the growing need for access to advanced theological education,” says Croghan. “As we implement the visions and plans we have for the LHOS, it is our hope to offer multiple resources that will assist and enhance the clerical and lay ministers in this area."
To conclude the celebration events, Augustana College President Rob Oliver and NABS President Michael Hagan announced launching of the House to local media and guests at a press conference. Both shared their excitement toward the new program of services and their school's commitment to the House and to strengthening leadership in this region.
"Before we even made our public announcement, we were receiving calls from individuals eager to learn more about ways they can both benefit and contribute to the LHOS. The initial vision of the Luther House of Study arose out these expressed needs and support,” adds Croghan. “As we move forward, we hope to foster an atmosphere of cooperation that simply furthers the proclamation of the Gospel."
