Future Ministry Professionals

Luther House of Study actively recruits, encourages, and supports a new generation of leaders by providing programs that help students pursuing theological study to overcome geographical hindrances and reduce financial burdens. By collaborating with educational institutions in the Upper Midwest, LHOS has established programs and educational tracks at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

LHOS supports future ministry professionals, both graduate students who would not otherwise be able to attend an ELCA seminary and undergraduate students who may be interested in the vocation of professional ministry.

Graduate Work

By collaborating with Lutheran seminaries in the Upper Midwest, LHOS looks to establish programs and educational tracks for those students seeking a theological education.

A course of study combines classes from Sioux Falls Seminary, classes taught by Dr. Chris Croghan, a Luther scholar on the faculty of both Augustana College and Sioux Falls Seminary, and classes taken primarily online through Luther Seminary.

In conjunction with the candidacy committees of South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota and Nebraska, the course of study is designed to foster an understanding of the Lutheran ethos for those students who would not otherwise be able to attend seminary due to financial and geographic constraints.

LHOS students meet regularly in fellowship groups to foster collegiality and a strong Lutheran grounding in thought and theology. There are a growing number of students in the program, each with his or her unique story.

Undergraduate Work

The Department of Religion and other courses of study at Augustana provide strong preparation for students who wish to attend seminary after earning their four-year degrees.

Augustana College undergraduate students meet regularly at Koinonia to discuss careers in the ministry and related fields and to conduct seminary visits.

"Proclamation on the Plains" Conference

The second annual "Proclamation on the Plains" Conference in January, 2012 will embolden both ministry professionals and lay people with insightful, relevant theological conversation. Dr. Diane Jacobson, of Luther Seminary, will discuss the Psalms at this second annual conference.

Other Communities We Serve

Anchored in the Lutheran faith and grounded in the foundation of Lutheran education, the Luther House of Study also serves the communities of current ministry professionals and congregations. Each area of service is anchored by the establishment of an endowed Luther scholar chair at Augustana College.
